The Last of My Days of Make Believe

I was twelve years old, I could not wait for this school day to be over, I had been thinking about it for weeks. It was Halloween! I was looking forward to getting disguised and go trick-or treating. I did not tell any of my friends, since the age of ten, they had all decided that they had out grown the whole trick-or-treating thing. “We are too old for that, we are not kids anymore, we will just give out candies to the kids at our front door.” To avoid getting laughed at, I pretended to agree with them and told them that I would be doing the same.

My parents could not afford to buy us toys, let alone halloween costumes. My two brothers, my sister and I, were left with the responsibility to create our own ways to play. My mom did provide a few essential materials and from there we were on our own to create. I can not begin to tell you how many forts we build in the basement with bed sheets, comforters and cardboard boxes. Every time the groceries were delivered to the house, I would get so excited! It meant we would have more boxes to play with. Most importantly, my mom got involved in our fun. She would make sure not to destroy the boxes and kept them for us to play. Continue reading →

Being Put In The Spotlight

He walked over to me, took the apples out of my hand, put them back on the stand and said, “un momento”. It was the first time I had walked into one these mini markets (verdureria). I noticed there were no plastic bags or baskets for me to put the fruit and vegetables in. How did this work? I figured, I would start by picking out some apples, walk over to the front to pay, surely the cashier would give me a bag and then I would know for next time. No such luck! I was so embarrassed, everyone just stopped and stared at me. My first thought was to leave, tell him he did not have to be so direct and go to a supermarket. What good would that do, I did not speak Spanish, he did not understand English. I would end up embarrassing myself more. I decided to stay and have fun with it. The ice was already broken, I succeeded in putting myself in the spotlight! I was the one who was new to this and the one who needed to adapt to their ways, not the other way around. Besides the fruit and vegetables here are of a much better quality than in the supermarket.

Are You Anchored Safely Or Out At Sea?

ARA Presidente Sarmiento

Enter your comments or personal thoughts about making changes and trying new things in the comment box at the end of this post.

It was one of the most stunning ships I have ever seen! The ARA Presidente Sarmiento is considered to be the last intact cruising training ship from the 1890’s. She has maintained her original appearance from 1898. I was so impressed by her architecture and beauty that I immediately inquired about going sailing aboard this ship. I was so disappointed when I was told that there were no sailing excursions on this ship. The reason why people were lining up to buy tickets was not to go sailing, but, to visit its historical interior. The ARA Presidente Sarmiento has been retired and is now anchored at the Port Modero as a museum ship.

The ship was originally built as a training ship for the Argentine Naval…to be OUT AT SEA! Now, it is at the safest place, away from the adventures of the sea. People can still enjoy it’s historical beauty, but, it’s true value is not being put in use. Sailing aboard this ship could be one of the most amazing adventures which we will never get to experience.

This blog is not about the ARA Presidente Sarmiento. It is to illustrate how so many of you are in the same situation as the ARA Presidente Sarmiento. Anchored safely at harbor, but, that is not what you are here for. You all have a special talent that is unique. You all have a much higher value to offer those around you and to the world. By staying anchored safely at your harbor, no one will ever get to experience who you really can be. Continue reading →

Believe in Yourself, Take Action, Become What You Might Be

We are sometimes faced with a situation we did not plan, our worst nightmare come true. I want to tell you about my experience on a trekking trip to the top of Mount Aconcagua. It is not about overcoming the fear of heights, but, to share how I learned that it is our response to these situations that will determine how it will affect us.

This could not be happening to me! I must be having a bad dream! I will wake up soon in my warm comfortable sheets and it will all be over. I never woke up! I was not dreaming! This was real! I was on the edge of the mountain and expected to get across. How did this happen? The sales clerk did not tell me it would be like this. I would have never taken this trip had I known.  He recommended this trekking trip for beginners with no prior experience.

The climb started off smooth. We were a group of five including the guide and my 17 year old niece. It was a peaceful, relaxing atmosphere. All was great until we were about half way up and suddenly took a sharp turn.

Now, I was standing on a path alongside a thirty foot cliff. It was so narrow that I could only place one foot at a time on the ground. Every step was a crucial one, one false move would send me off the side. I could feel my heart beating in my throat. My legs started to tremble, my mouth was dry. I analyzed my surroundings; maybe I could make my way back to the refuge. All around me there was nothing but mountains. No signs of civilization. I would surely get lost if I turned back. How was I going to get out of this? To make matters worse, it started raining. Great! Now I was cold, my shoes were wet, and the rocks were moist from the rain. In desperation, I thought of asking the guide if someone could come get me by helicopter, there was no way I could do this! I was falling behind, I asked the others to stop for a drink of water to buy some time and try to get myself together. My inner voice was telling me “you are never going to make it, if you keep going, you will get dizzy, trip and fall off this mountain”. Continue reading →
